Singers are accepted into the SMYOC Choral Program through an individual audition, by appointment only, with a Choir Conductor. Entry to all SMYOC groups is by audition.

California or Prince Frederick?

SMYOC usually holds choir auditions and rehearsals at 2 locations: Patuxent Presbyterian Church in California and Calvert Middle School in Prince Frederick. You may decide which location is most convenient for you and let us know which one you've chosen on the Audition Application Form. Please note that SMYOC will not constrain your location choice. The only factor is your own preference; we anticipate that most applicants will choose the location closest to home.

At each location, there are 2 choirs:

  • A Preparatory Choir, for less experienced singers
    • Our prep choir in Calvert is called 'ALLEGRO'
    • Our prep choir in St. Mary's is called 'TREBLEMAKERS'
  • A Youth Choir, for more experienced singers who have previously performed in choral ensembles
    • Our youth choir in Calvert is called 'FERMATA'
    • Our youth choir in St. Mary's is called 'CAPELLA'

Audition Dates

Auditions are held throughout the year. They are usually held immediately before choir rehearsals, on Monday evenings. Once you have submitted your online application form, you will be invited, by email, to choose an audition date from a list. If you are unable to make any of the date(s) or time(s) of the auditions, please contact SMYOC. An additional audition may be granted at the discretion of the Conductor.

Choir rehearsals usually take on Monday evenings. We publish our rehearsal dates, times and venues on our website and via Google Calendar, which you will be invited to view once you've joined us.

Singers aged 8 and above may audition. Singers up to the age of 20 may be accepted. Less experienced singers should audition for the Preparatory Choir. More experienced singers should audition for the Youth Choir; these singers will have performed previously in choral ensembles and are usually aged 12 and above.

The Audition

  • Please plan on arriving at the audition venue at least 15 minutes before your audition start time.
  • If you are auditioning for the Youth Choir (for more experienced singers):

    • Auditions will last approximately 15 minutes.
    • For the audition, singers should:
      • Prepare to sing the Star-Spangled Banner without accompaniment. Make sure to practice singing it a capella.
      • Prepare to sing a second song of your own choosing. Your choice of song matters greatly, try avoid pop songs and instead look for musical theatre, folk songs, spiritual, or a hymn.  Choose a piece that fits your range and shows off the strengths of your voice.
      • Come prepared to demonstrate your level of musical literacy through a series of musical exercises. These will include rhythmic and melodic exercises, musical memory sequences, and some sight-singing.
  • If you are auditioning for the Preparatory Choir (for less experienced singers):

    • Auditions will last approximately 10 minutes.
    • For the audition, singers should:
      • Prepare to sing Happy Birthday as a solo.
      • Prepare to sing Row-Row-Row Your Boat as a round. Singers should be able to hold their own part successfully while others/another is singing another part.
      • Come prepared to do a few musical exercises, including some rhythmic exercises, melodic imitations and pitch-matching.
    • Here's a short video that will show Preparatory Choir applicants what to expect at audition:

Tuition is $295 per student. You will be asked to pay an additional $25 for rental of performance attire, which covers cleaning fees after we receive the attire back at the end of the season. Total fees are therefore $320.

The fee covers both the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 seasons, until the end of June 2019.

There are discounts for siblings and for those that join for a single season. If you would like to know more about discounts, please email us at

Tuition is budgeted to cover less than 40% of SMYOC’s annual operating expenses. We rely on grants, corporate sponsorship, ticket sales and individual contributions to cover our remaining expenses.

Financial Aid

It is our policy that no student be discouraged from participating due to financial hardship. An application form for need-based financial assistance can be downloaded by clicking here: Financial Aid Form. Once it is complete, please seal it in an envelope and hand it to your group manager or post it by mail to SMYOC.
