QUESTION: What time of year does SMYOC rehearse?

ANSWER:

We divide the year into 2 seasons, broadly aligned to the public school seasons. The first season (the Fall season) runs from August until December each year, the second (the Spring season) from January to June. We take a short break at the end of December until January and a longer break from June to August. In the Fall, the first rehearsal is usually at the end of August, in preparation for a concert at the end of November. In the Spring, the first rehearsal is usually in mid January, in preparation for a concert in late May or early June. We adjust the dates each year in an attempt to avoid conflicts with other musical events, such as school and tri-county rehearsals and concerts.

QUESTION: What time of day does SMYOC rehearse?

ANSWER:

Each group has its own rehearsal times, dependent upon the availability of facilities and the Director of the group. All our groups rehearse during the evenings, usually starting between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The groups containing the most young children start earlier. Rehearsals are typically either 90 minutes or 2 hours in duration. As a concert approaches each season, additional rehearsals (such as "Dress Rehearsals") are required and these sometimes take place during a weekend.

QUESTION: What should I do if I cannot make a rehearsal due to illness or an emergency?

ANSWER:

If you need to miss practice due to an illness or emergency, please send an email to your ensemble manager.

QUESTION: How many concerts does each ensemble perform each year?

QUESTION: How did SMYOC get its name?

ANSWER:

The Southern Maryland Youth Orchestra was formed in late 2012 by the fabulously amazing Mrs. Julia Nichols and is now entering its 8th concert season. In September 2014, the Southern Maryland Youth Choir was formed under the same Board. During Spring 2015, the name of the organization was changed to Southern Maryland Youth Orchestra and Choir (SMYOC). The 2 musical groups are still jointly managed under a single Board, with Julia as President.
