Come play and sing with us!
Our mission is to nurture, develop and advance talented young musicians in quality orchestral and choral programs.
We welcome instrumentalists and singers in grades 3 through 12 from St. Mary's, Calvert and Charles counties. The musicians perform a wide range of classical and modern repertoire and have the opportunity to join our Pops program. Our very best musicians are invited to join the Ambassador Program, where they are challenged to perform at the highest level.
Our Orchestral Program
SMYOC has a 2-tier orchestral progam. The upper tier, known as the Youth Orchestra, allows its musicians to choose which of 2 rehearsal locations they would like to attend: Leonardtown or Prince Frederick. The same repertoire is rehearsed weekly at each location; the 2 groups join together for performances to make one large Youth Orchestra on a single stage. The Youth Orchestra is a full symphonic orchestra, containing string, woodwind, brass and percussion sections, and is suited to experienced students who play at Level 4 or better; applicants up to age 20 may be accepted. The lower tier, known as the Preparatory Strings Orchestra welcomes less experienced students who play violin, viola, cello or bass at Level 2 or above. The Prep Orchestra rehearses weekly as a single group, at a rehearsal location in either Calvert or St. Mary's counties. Click here to apply for an audition. Don't hesitate to apply now to ensure you can join us this year!
Our Choral Program
SMYOC has a 2-tier choral program in Calvert County and a 2-tier choral program in St. Mary's County. In each county, the advanced group, known as the Youth Choir, is for more experienced and developed singers, middle school through high school. The lower tier groups, one in each county, known as the Preparatory Choir, is a beginning to intermediate level choir for singers aged 8 and up with little or no choral background - but with clear music potential. We are committed to providing opportunities for talented singers in the tri-county area to experience the transformative power of vocal music.
Click here to apply for the next round of choir auditions, which will be held in August. There will be rehearsals in both Prince Frederick and Leonardtown. Come be a part of something really special!
